Now more than ever, the educator community needs a way to come together and engage in a collective conversation around reimagining education. In that spirit, HIVE 2020 is going completely virtual.

With immersive sessions over five days, our entire professional learning event, including all coffee chats, thought-provoking keynotes and interactive workshops will be hosted via the Zoom platform. Each session will be live and recorded for future playback.

Dr. Kristopher J. Childs

Dr. ChildsDr. Kristopher J. Childs, is focused on creating a movement to inspire all who are involved in academic endeavors globally—through promotion, support, and recognition to pursue excellence and academic success.

Dr. Childs has a student-centered focus and believes in a teamwork approach of achieving common goals and improving student academic success. 

As a speaker, he desires to inspire one to relentlessly go after their goals and dreams. He seeks to help one find their passion and their purpose. He is known for his mantra “Live Life to the Fullest...You Only Get One."

Dr. Childs has a strong penchant for working with youth and using education as a basis for his messages. As Malcolm X stated, “Education is the passport to the future.” He strives to create an academic achievement driven culture and wants to ensure all youth achieve the unachievable.

Natalie Wexler

Natalie Wexler is an education writer and the author of The Knowledge Gap: The Hidden Cause of America’s Broken Education System—and How to Fix It (Avery 2019). She is also the co-author, with Judith C. Hochman, of The Writing Revolution: A Guide to Advancing Thinking Through Writing in All Subjects and Grades (Jossey-Bass, 2017), and a senior contributor to the education channel on Forbes.com.

Baruti Kafele

A highly-regarded urban educator in New Jersey for over twenty years, Principal Baruti Kafele distinguished himself as a master teacher and a transformational school leader. As an elementary school teacher in East Orange, NJ, he was selected as the East Orange School District and Essex County Public Schools Teacher of the Year, he was a New Jersey State Teacher of the Year finalist, and a recipient of the New Jersey Education Association Award of Excellence.

Sara Van Der Werf

Sara is a consultant, speaker and professional development provider with a 25-year career as a mathematics teacher for Minneapolis Public Schools.  Sara taught math in grades 7-12 as well as spent several years as the K-12 math lead for her district. She also served on the board, most recently as President, of her state's NCTM affiliate, the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

D. Lacy Asbill & Elana Metz

Lacy and Elana are the Founding Directors of Moving Forward Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the academic, emotional, and life outcomes of historically underserved students. Since founding the organization in 2004, they have hired, trained and managed over 500 young adult educators, and have served more than 10,000 low-income, low-performing students in their community.

Dr. Amanda Jansen

Dr. Jansen is a professor in the mathematics education program area in the School of Education at the University of Delaware where she teaches future elementary and secondary teachers. Her research focuses on students’ engagement with mathematics and understanding how pre-service teachers learn to teach mathematics. Her new book, Rough Draft Math, will be published by Stenhouse in Spring 2020.

Rashad Slade

Rashad Slade is the Executive Director of Student Assignment for Guilford County Schools (GCS) in North Carolina. GCS is the third-largest district in North Carolina, serving nearly 72,000 students across 126 schools in urban, suburban and rural areas. Rashad has over 15 years in education as a teacher, technology integration specialist, school-based administrator, and central office administrator.
